As a storm approaches a southern Louisiana bayou community called the "Bathtub" (a community cut off from the rest of the world by a levee), five-year-old Hushpuppy and her unhealthy, hot-tempered father, Wink, are optimistic about their life and their future. The children in school are being taught by Miss Bathsheba about nature and the release of prehistoric creatures called "Aurochs" from the melting ice caps. At home, Hushpuppy fends for herself while her father is missing. When he returns, he is wearing a hospital gown and bracelet. They argue and Hushpuppy sets her house on fire. A chase ensues between the two, and she ends up getting slapped by Wink. When she retaliates by punching him in the chest, Wink collapses. Hushpuppy, realizing the damage she has caused, runs for help only to find her father missing when she returns.

Meanwhile, in the Arctic, the frozen Aurochs in an ice shelf start drifting into the ocean.

Many of the Bathtub residents start fleeing due to the threat of the oncoming storm. Wink reappears staggering along the side of the road and finds and drags Hushpuppy home to start barricading before the storm hits the town. In an effort to make his daughter feel better Wink attempts to scare off the storm by firing a shotgun at the clouds. The next day, the two tour the devastation and connect with the surviving residents. The Bathtub residents celebrate and make plans to rebuild their community, but everything begins to die because of the salt water brought in by the storm surge. Wink hatches a plan to drain the water away by destroying the levee. He and a small group of friends plant dynamite and blow a hole in the wall using an alligator gar, and the water recedes, but it brings the authorities who force the mandatory evacuation order, removing the inhabitants of the Bathtub to an emergency shelter. There, Dr. Maloney performs surgery on Wink, but it doesn't restore Wink's health. At the first opportunity, the evacuees storm out and escape back to their homes.

Aware of her father’s condition, Hushpuppy leaves in search of her mother. She and her friends swim to a boat which takes them to a floating bar. Hushpuppy meets a cook who may be her mother, though the woman doesn't recognize her. The cook says that she can stay if she wants, but Hushpuppy says that she's got to go home. Hushpuppy and her friends return home where she confronts the Aurochs freed from the ice caps. As the Aurochs leave, Hushpuppy enters her home and says her last goodbyes to the dying Wink, listening to his last heartbeat. She sets his funeral pyre ablaze, standing in solidarity along with the remaining residents of the Bathtub.

The movie opens with a hungover Josh (Xavier Samuel) being woken up by Rory (Richard Brancatisano). Rory tells Josh that he shouldn't have proposed to his sister, Tina (Sharni Vinson). Rory says Tina is at the beach, and that she has something for him. Josh sees Tina and she shows him a seahorse. Meanwhile, an old man is swimming out in the ocean and Rory, a lifeguard, is also out on the water. Another lifeguard on the watch tower sees the old man being eaten by a shark, but is unable to alert Rory. Josh quickly takes a jet ski and goes to get him; but before he can explain, a shark bursts through Rory's board and sends him flying into the water. Josh struggles to get Rory up onto the jet ski but the shark pulls him under and he is devoured.

A year later, Josh walks to the supermarket where he now works. As he gets there, 2 people in a car - Doyle (Julian McMahon) and Kirby (Dan Wyllie) - are discussing a robbery. They drive into the car park where Kyle (Lincoln Lewis) and Heather (Cariba Heine) are parked for a make-out session, with Heather's dog, Bully, sitting in the back seat. Meanwhile, in the supermarket, Jaime (Phoebe Tonkin) begins to shoplift and is subsequently chased by a security guard. She hides in the delivery room where she meets her boyfriend Ryan (Alex Russell). Ryan's boss Jessup (Adrian Pang) walks in with the security guard and tells Jaime he has called the police. He also fires Ryan.

On the floor, Josh is stocking shelves with Naomi (Alice Parkinson) when he sees Tina with her new best friend Steven (Qi Yuwu). Just as he's about to engage in a conversation with her, Jessup steps up and tells Josh to go clean himself up. Meanwhile, a police officer, Todd (Martin Sacks), arrives, and is revealed to be Jaime's dad.

Doyle and Kirby make an agreement about what happens after the robbery, and proceed into the supermarket. Doyle forces Jessup to open a safe, but it is empty. He then asks where the money is as they walk towards the cash registers. There, Todd stops him, but Kirby holds a gun to a woman's head.

Outside, Ryan walks over to Todd's car that Jaime is in and lets her out. While Jaime goes back into the supermarket to get her boyfriend his job back, Ryan walks back to his van to leave, but a flat battery keeps him from leaving.

Back in the supermarket, Josh hears a gunshot and runs through to the others. Kirby has shot the woman and is now holding Tina at gunpoint. Suddenly, a tsunami wave floods the supermarket, trapping Kyle, Heather and Ryan in the car park. The only survivors inside the supermarket are Tina, Josh, Doyle, Kyle, Heather, Steven, Jaime, Jessup, Kirby, Todd, Naomi and Neil (Nicholas McCallum). As they try to find a way out of the supermarket, Neil is killed by a 12 foot great white shark. Meanwhile, a second great white approaches Kyle and Heather, who are trapped in their car. A wire in the supermarket starts to spark so Steven turns off the electricity, but drowns after his success. The shark in the car park smashes Kyle's window, filling his car with water. Ryan, standing on top of wreckage, cuts off a dead woman's hand and puts it in the water, distracting the shark. Kyle and Heather swim to Ryan's van, but Kyle lets the dog go in order to save himself at the last minute.

The survivors in the store try to escape through a vent, but Jessup is bitten in half by the shark, attracted by crabs falling from the vent. Kirby gets knocked into the water, prompting Doyle to feed Jess's other half to the shark in order to save Kirby. Back in the car park, Ryan attempts to get back to his van using the pipes, but he falls in. Kyle saves him, but is knocked into the water and killed. Inside the supermarket, the remaining group make a plan to catch their shark. The plan fails due to the lack of live bait, so Kirby grabs a hook and puts it through Naomi's shirt, using her as bait. Before the shark can attack, Doyle stabs Kirby and saves Naomi, making Kirby the bait. With live bait, the survivors catch the shark successfully.

As the group in the supermarket make their way out and find Bully alive, Jaime hears Ryan banging on the pipes. She and Josh go to rescue Ryan and Heather from the car park, but are chased by the second shark to Todd's car. Josh grabs Tod's tazer and shotgun, jumps into the water and kills the shark with the shotgun. The four of them get back into the supermarket and are moving to the exit when a tremor strikes, breaking the first shark loose. Josh realizes he still has the taser, and uses it to kill the shark. Ryan, Josh, Todd, Jaime, Tina, Heather, Bully, Doyle and Naomi leave the supermarket, reaching the severely damage street. As the camera pans away from the characters and shows the devastation, it follows a seagull as it flies into view and out to sea, whereupon a shark jumps out of the water and swallows it.

The film opens with Regan (Kirsten Dunst), a miserable careerist in her early thirties, having lunch with her longtime friend, Becky (Rebel Wilson), who reveals that she's getting married to her boyfriend, Dale. Although secretly jealous and embittered by the fact that her "fat friend" is now engaged, Regan notifies their two other friends, the sardonic Gena (Lizzy Caplan) and the rowdy party girl Katie (Isla Fisher). Six months later, the women are preparing for Becky's impromptu bachelorette party that evening; Gena flies in to New York from Los Angeles, and the four meet at the hotel, when Katie announces that she has brought cocaine for all of them to do. At the dinner party that night, Gena runs into her ex-boyfriend Clyde (Adam Scott), whom she sees flirting with Dale's younger sister, and Katie runs into Joe (Kyle Bornheimer), a former classmate and pot dealer. Trevor (James Marsden), the best man, gives a speech at the party, and Gena, high on cocaine, reveals in her toast that she once caught Becky forcing herself to throw up in the high school bathrooms. After the dinner, the women go to their suite, where Katie's gay co-worker arrives and does a striptease for the women, but Becky stops it after he jokingly calls her "Pigface", a cruel nickname of hers in high school. Becky leaves the bachelorette party, and Regan, Gena and Katie are left in the hotel room where they drink and continue to do cocaine. Drunk and high, the three accidentally rip the dress, and Katie gets a nosebleed and stains it with her blood. Regan contacts a friend who owns a bridal store, who reluctantly agrees to open the store for them in the middle of the night. After unsuccessfully searching the store for a dress that will fit Becky, Katie reveals that she can sew, which leads the women on a hunt for thread and a sewing machine. Trevor text messages Regan asking the girls to stop by the strip club the men are at, which they agree to. Gena takes the dress into the strip club's bathroom where she attempts to clean it; there, she has a conversation with a stripper who begins using the dress as a towel and toilet paper. Regan, furious over the situation, gets into an argument with Gena, who insists they confess everything to Becky, and it is revealed in the argument that Gena had an abortion. Gena leaves the club with Clyde and the dress. Meanwhile, Joe attempts to woo Katie, who is heavily intoxicated and high on cocaine, and Regan ends up having sex with Trevor in the hotel bathroom. Clyde and Gena spend the evening together reminiscing and have sex. Meanwhile, Joe and Katie spend the night in the hotel swimming pool, where Katie reveals that she attempted suicide the year before. Becky calls and asks Regan to come to her room so they can talk; in their conversation, it is revealed that Regan is bulimic, and that Becky covered it for her in high school. Just as Regan begins to tell Becky about her dress, Becky's mother arrives, and they begin to prepare for the wedding. Gena and Clyde head to the wedding in the morning while the party planners are unable to find the missing dress. Gena asks a maid at the hotel to help her make some small touch-ups to the dress before bringing it to Becky; meanwhile, Katie locks herself in the bathroom and overdoses on Xanax. While Regan forces Katie to vomit the pills, she ends up puking all over Regan's dress. Regan, in an attempt to buy time, convinces Becky to ride to the wedding in her pajamas and put on the dress when she arrives. Becky, irate, screams at her mother and Regan in the taxi. Gena arrives to the wedding with the dress, still stained with blood. Becky ends up walking down the aisle while Regan and Gena sit on a bench and watch the ceremony, where they are joined by Katie, who arrives late. At the reception, Joe and Katie talk and kiss, Regan tries to sleep, and Clyde gives an obscene speech about having sex with Gena the night before. The film ends as the four women make up and dance together at the party.
