Arthur Seaton is a young machinist at a Nottingham factory. Angry at his lot in life, he is determined not to be tied down to living a life of domestic drudgery like the people around him, including his parents, whom he describes as "dead from the neck up". He spends his wages at weekends on drinking and having a good time. Arthur is having an affair with Brenda, the wife of an older co-worker. He also begins a relationship with Doreen, a single woman closer to his age. When Brenda gets pregnant, Arthur asks his Aunt Ada for advice on aborting the child (as abortions were not legal at that time). None of Ada's advice works and Brenda decides that she will keep the child and suffer the consequences. There is a terrifying scene where Brenda’s husband finds out about her pregnancy and affair with Arthur. He enlists the help of his brother and a fellow soldier to chase Arthur down through a town carnival and give him a severe beating. Arthur is trapped on a merry-go-round as the three menacingly stand and wait for him. Brenda resumes her normal life taking care of her husband and children while Arthur slowly recovers. After recovering, Arthur returns to work but knows he can never see Brenda (or his soon to be born child) again. The film ends with Arthur and Doreen discussing marriage and the prospect of a new home together.

Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) adalah seorang bintang film tampan yang serba-bisa. Seorang aktris kurang berbakat, Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen) yang hampir selalu menjadi pasangannya di film-film yang dibintanginya, selalu meyakinkan dirinya - dan publik - bahwa drama percintaan palsu di studio selama ini adalah kenyataan.

Suatu hari, ketika menghadiri acara yang dihadiri oleh fans-fans nya yang histeris, Don melarikan diri, dan lompat masuk ke mobil yang sedang dikendarai oleh Kathy Selden (Debbie Reynolds). Akhirnya ia mengantar Don sampai ke sebuah tempat - yang kebetulan searah dengan tujuannya. Kathy sempat mengatakan bahwa ia adalah seorang aktris panggung. Don menghadiri sebuah acara. Dalam acara tersebut, ketua studio Don mempertunjukan video singkat tentang 'gambar yang berbicara', sebuah hal yang baru pada masa itu. Tetapi, sayangnya para tamu tidak terkesan. Tak disangka, Don dan Kathy berjumpa lagi, dan ternyata Kathy adalah seorang gadis penari di acara itu. Don mengejek Kathy yang ketika di mobil berkata bahwa ia adalah seorang aktris. Kathy yang malu dan kesal, melempar kue ke wajah Don tetapi malah mengenai wajah Lina.

Setelah film bersuara yang pertama, The Jazz Singer pada yahun 1927, sukser di pasaran, R.F bersikeras ingin membuat film yang akan dibintangi Don dan Lina, The Dueling Cavalier secara bersuara. Masalah utamanya adalah suara Lina. Suara Lina jauh dari kata 'merdu'. Selain itu, pemutaran ulang film untuk dipertunjukan kepada penonton adalah sebuah bencana! Suara dan gambar tidak sesuai.

Teman baik Don, Cosmo Brown (Donald O'Connor), mendapatkan ide agar Kathy menjadi suara Lina. Kathy akhirnya setuju, dan proses pengisian suara pun dijalankan. The Dueling Cavalier diubah menjadi sebuah film musikal yang berubah pula judulnya menjadi The Dancing Cavalier. Film ini sangat sukses. Lina adalah orang yang paling menikmati kesuksesan ini. Ia bahkan mengancam R.F agar mengatur sedemikian rupa agar Kathy tetap mau menjadi suaranya.

Akhirnya, pada suatu acara, para penonton menyoraki Lina agar bernyanyi. Don, Cosmo, dan R.F menyuruh Kathy untuk sekali lagi menjadi suara Lina dari belakang panggung. Kathy sangat marah. Ia kecewa, tak menyangka bahwa mereka akan berani memintanya berbuat seperti ini dan menyatakan bahwa inilah terakhir kalinya. Ia pun berkata tak sudi bertemu lagi dengan Don dimanapun, kapanpun itu. Lina akhirnya, 'bernyanyi' dengan penuh percaya diri. Ketika sedang asyik bernyanyi, tiba-tiba semua penonton yang ada tertawa terbahak-bahak. Ternyata, Don, Cosmo, dan R.F mengangkat tirai di panggung untuk memperkenalkan ke para penonton 'bintang sesungguhnya dari film tersebut'.
